Find out how much TFSA contribution room you have available.
You may have over-contributed to your TFSA. The CRA charges a penalty of 1% per month on the excess amount. Contact the CRA or your financial institution to resolve this.
Your TFSA contribution room starts accumulating the year you turn 18, as long as you’re a Canadian resident. The annual limit has ranged from $5,000 (2009) to $7,000 (2024-2025), and any unused room carries forward indefinitely. If you’ve never contributed, your total lifetime room in 2025 could be as high as $102,000.
Withdrawals are added back to your room — but not until January 1st of the following year. This means if you withdraw and re-deposit in the same year, it counts as a new contribution and could push you over your limit. Over-contributions are penalized at 1% per month on the excess amount.

Room only accumulates for years you were 18 or older and a Canadian resident for tax purposes. This calculator does not track individual transaction timing within a year.
