See how much free government grant money your child qualifies for.
An RESP unlocks government grants that are essentially free money. The Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) matches 20% of your contributions, up to $500 per year and $7,200 over the child’s lifetime. Contributing $2,500 each year captures the full annual grant. Lower- and middle-income families qualify for Additional CESG — an extra 10–20% on the first $500 contributed each year.
Families with modest incomes may also receive the Canada Learning Bond (CLB) — up to $2,000 per child with no contribution required at all. That’s $500 in the first year plus $100 each subsequent year of eligibility. Combined, these grants can add thousands to your child’s education fund before investment growth.
Disclaimer: This calculator provides estimates based on current CESG and CLB rules and 2024 income thresholds (which adjust annually). The lifetime CESG maximum is $7,200 per child, and grants are available until the end of the year the child turns 17 (with special conditions at ages 16–17). Quebec residents may also qualify for the QESI, not included here. Consult your RESP provider for details specific to your situation.
